Once you have decided to add a Butterfield Trail Farm puppy to your family you will need to be placed on our waiting list. You may contact me by phone or email to place a deposit. We will begin taking deposits when pregnancy is confirmed on x-ray and the number of puppies she will have are identified. Deposits are non refundable but can be carried over to another litter. If for any reason that you do not receive a puppy due to unforeseen circumstances on our part, your deposit will be refunded.
Puppies are chosen by order of deposit. Although we do not pick your puppy for you, we do offer advice based on what you are looking for in your companion. Puppies undergo a temperament test, which allows us to give feedback regarding how they might fit into your lifestyle. It is important to understand puppy temperament can change overtime based on the way they are raised, trained, and socialized once they reach their forever home. Photo updates and videos will be sent weekly once a deposit is place. We will begin the process of assigning puppies a few weeks after they are born and will be based on the order of the wait list.
When the puppies are 8 weeeks old they will be ready for their forever home. We will contact you to schedule your pick up date and time. If you need to make arrangements for your puppy to be transported or if we have agreed to meet you then final arrangements will be made at that time. Please remember that we live on a working farm and we will not always be able to meet you but we will give every effort.
Your puppy will be up to date on vaccinations and deworming. A comprehensive health record will be given upon pickup. We also provide a collar, chew toy, and blanket with mom and sibling scent. Puppies are ready for their new homes at eight weeks of age.
Our breeding dogs are part of our family. They can usually be found on the couch with us or tagging along with me outside at the barn or going for a ride into town. We believe it is important they are raised as family members in order to promote these qualities in their puppies. We raise limited litters each year in our home, where each mother is provided her own whelping space. Each puppy will begin being handled shortly after birth.
Our puppies are raised in a designated puppy area that is cleaned and sanitized at least 2 times a day. Cleaning solutions used are safe for new puppies to be around. Gloves are required when handling the puppies for their first 1-2 weeks of life and shoes are taken off when working in their area. We believe a clean environment is key for having healthy growing puppies.
Tempermentw and health is our highest priority. Before a dog joins our breeding program they go through different tests important to their breed. Such as, temperament, genetics, and OFA certification. Health testing is so important to produce the best offspring possible and eliminate health issues.
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) is a training program that introduces mild stimulations to very young puppies (days 3-16) in a controlled way. This curriculum helps encourage neurological growth, which improves the development of the pup’s immune system, cardiovascular system, and stress tolerance.
Early Scent Introduction (ESI) is a training program for puppies designed to enhance their ability to identify, and react to, specific scents. Starting at day 3-16, we introduce a strong scent to the puppy for brief intervals, and record the puppy’s reaction. ESI has several benefits—improved confidence and stability, greater nose awareness, and more adaptive to change.
As soon as puppies start opening their ears (around 2 weeks of age) we start sound training. We live in a world full of loud, new and unusual sounds. All of these sounds our dogs will encounter—from noises inside the home (such as the vacuum or dishwasher), to environments such as the dog parks (birds chirping or dogs barking), and the outside world (traffic, storms, fireworks). Teaching a puppy to be comfortable with all sorts of sounds is key to having a well-balanced and behaved dog.
We acclimate the puppies to foreign objects and new surroundings each day. This practice helps them adapt more easily to new surfaces and environments later on in life. We introduce new areas in the home/yard, offer unique toys, and have them play on sensory mats. We are cautious and mindful of puppies fear periods to ensure that we are never scaring them, but instead creating positive experiences.
We pride ourselves in providing the best experience you’ll ever have getting a puppy. We provide transparency, daily updates on instagram, and weekly emails so you can watch your puppy grow. Responding to emails and DM’s are done within 24 hours.
